“What’s in a name? A whole philosophy.”
Every detail in design tells a story. Even the name on the door.
When it came to naming the studio, we had a choice: use a full name, or take a quieter route. We chose the latter—J.J. Poonawala.
Not because it sounds more polished. Not because it’s catchy. But because it reflects how we work—intentionally, intuitively, and without ego.
The name J.J. Poonawala symbolizes a deeply personal connection to my identity. It reflects my thought process and creativity, but from a distance. By choosing initials over a full name, we adopted a modern, gender-neutral approach—stepping away from the weight of personal branding and allowing the studio to speak through its work, not its founder.
While the name itself doesn’t directly represent our design philosophy, it creates room for the work to take center stage. Because we believe that good design doesn’t need a loud introduction—it reveals itself through emotion, craftsmanship, and timeless impact.
The same principle guided our logo—a mirrored monogram that is both ornamental and restrained. The form invites interpretation: perhaps wings, perhaps an abstracted motif, perhaps simply symmetry in motion. Like our spaces, it’s layered and open-ended.
And then there’s the colour palette:
- Deep plum and cool greys.
- Plum, for its richness and quiet depth—a colour associated with intuition, individuality, and subtle luxury.
- Grey, for its balance and neutrality—never overpowering, always grounding. Together, they express our duality: emotional and structured, bold and timeless, refined yet warm.

We believe in presence, not performance. In legacy, not labels. In design that holds space for stories—not signatures.
And so the name stays quiet—so that your space can speak.
Do you think a name should reflect the designer—or the design?
We’d love to know your thoughts.
Welcome to J.J. Poonawala. – Where the name is just the beginning.
